 The Department of Geography and Urban Studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is accepting applications for funded doctoral position beginning Fall 2022. The doctoral program focuses on geographic approaches to the study of urban and environmental processes and conditions in US and international settings.  Our emphasis is on the themes of globalization, sustainability, social justice, and geographical methods. We train our students to conduct theoretically-informed and empirically-grounded research along the urban to rural continuum, understand interdisciplinary and integrative analyses of complex human-environmental processes, and specialize in techniques for urban and environmental analysis with an emphasis on GIS, spatial statistics, and qualitative methods.  We train students to better address the pressing challenges of sustainability and equity. Many students are involved in the Center for Sustainable Communities and the Spatial Analysis Laboratory at Temple (SAL@T), which is a university-wide core-facility in health geographics situated in and managed by the Department of Geography and Urban Studies.

The position is supported through a teaching assistantship that provides a stipend plus tuition remission. Students making good progress in the program are guaranteed five years of funding including one semester funded for work on dissertation research.
