Professor Joshua Mask has published a new paper titled Does AI Help Economics Students Learn or Just Finish? A Classroom Field Study in the International Review of Economics Education. His work examines the impact of an AI tutor embedded in the Macmillan Achieve homework platform on honors macroeconomic principles students, using assignment-level data across 32 students and 11 homework assignments.
While students adopted the tool quickly, usage declined sharply over the semester, and greater AI hint use was associated with more attempts per question but not with higher homework, exam or final course scores. The findings offer an important contribution to understanding the impact of AI tools on learning outcomes.
Congratulations to Professor Mask!
