Spring 2023 Community Scholars Program
What is the Community Scholars Program?
The Community Scholars Program is a paid opportunity for CLA students to gain tools to make a difference in the community, in partnership with other like-minded students. During this 10-week introductory program, you’ll learn principles of effective engagement, participate in community projects, and discuss issues that impact life in Philadelphia. Community Scholars who complete all program requirements will receive a $1500 award.
As a Community Scholar, you’ll have the opportunity to:
- Work with local organizations and learn from community leaders
- Research social justice issues of personal interest
- Gain a deeper understanding of North Philadelphia communities
- Learn tools to equitably work for change
- Make connections with organizations providing critical community services and resources
Applicants must have a declared major in the College of Liberal Arts, a 3.25 GPA or higher, and Sophomore status or above during the program semester. Program participants must be available to dedicate a minimum of 60 hours during the semester (5 - 7 hours per week), beginning the week of February 7th. Applicants must also be available during all Community Scholars meetings, which will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:30pm.
Programming will take place in person with some asynchronous activity outside of meeting times. Candidates must be on or able to travel regularly to Temple’s campus and field experience locations within the city. Public transportation will be utilized for certain program activities. Comfort using SEPTA is recommended, and all transportation costs will be covered.
