Olutoyosi (Toyo) Aboderin is a first-generation Nigerian from South Jersey. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Stockton University with a concentration in Public Relations and a minor in Africana Studies. At Stockton University, Olutoyosi served on the Student Senate Academic Affairs Committee, worked as a resident assistant, and served as the president and student advisor for the African Student Organization. She is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and served as the president of the Pi Chi chapter.
In 2014, Olutoyosi founded a student organization called “Redefining Beauty,” which challenged society’s destructive perceptions of beauty and its detrimental effects on college students.
One of Olutoyosi’s proudest contributions was conducting interviews in 2017 under Dr. Donnetrice Allision’s directive to aid in developing the Africana Studies major at Stockton University.
Olutoyosi received her Master of Arts degree in Africology at Temple University and is currently a third-year doctoral student and teaching assistant. She has returned to Stockton University as an adjunct professor in the Africana Studies Department and instructor for Stockton’s newest dual-credit initiative in conjunction with the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City.
Olutoyosi has taught classes such as “The History of Blacks in Cinema,” “African Americans on Television,” “Race Gender and Media,” and “African Americans and Pop Culture.” She is a past recipient of the Stephen P. Couvillion Award and a former Ankh Maat Wedjau Honor Society member. Olutoyosi currently serves as the outreach coordinator for the Organization of African American Studies Graduate Students.
