On the fate of the USS Olympia

American Studies professor Seth Bruggeman was interviewed by WHYY's Newsworks about the future of the USS Olympia, an 1895 warship that's been docked in Philadelphia for almost 50 years. He notes that the USS Olympia has held a special place in local tourism -- not simply by tourists, but rather by everyday community members:

It was added during the '50s, after the Olympia was brought to Philadelphia, as a spot local couples could get married. There are aspects to the Olympia's history that really speak volumes as to how a community values a historic resource that may not be immediately evident to historians.
