From its dynastic rule dating back to 2100 BCE through its modern-day place as a world power, China has a history, a culture and a language with backgrounds richer than nearly any other society. The College of Liberal Arts’ Chinese major teaches students to become highly proficient in written and spoken Chinese, yes. But its faculty also take care to impart in students a deeper understanding of the Chinese ethos, better preparing them not just to speak Chinese in the classroom, but to converse in it with native speakers.
