Will Hafer studies the Cold War and Soviet-Socialism in the USSR and Eastern Europe under Leonid Brezhnev, from 1964 to 1982. Of particular focus in his research is the flow of power between ideology, Cold War politics, and nationalism within Russian film and media. In conversation with their Cold War adversaries, American writers, film stars, playwrights, and musicians complicated the bipolarity of Soviet ideology. Will Hafer has also studied how these relationships and connections have reappeared in Putin's cultural reinvention of Russian Empire in the 21st century, particularly focusing on events after the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014.
