Maria's area of linguistic focus includes bilingual communities and sociolinguistics. She has previously worked with the Kriol community in San Andrés, Colombia, following their migrational movements to the Mainland, and pinpointing key phonetic changes that were motivated by shifting social factors.

For her dissertation, she aims to work with Colombian bilingual communities in an effort to understand their syntactic variation patterns—especially focusing on Subject Pronoun Expression (SPE) and its relationship to time in the U.S, as well as other social variables.
