Barker is a third-year Ph.D. student who joined Temple University after earning their BS in Criminology and Justice Studies and a minor in Philosophy from Drexel University. While attending Drexel, Barker worked with the Philadelphia Lawyers for Social Equity to conduct research on individuals seeking expungements in Philadelphia. Afterwards, Barker presented a geographic analysis of their findings at the American Society of Criminology. Later in their undergraduate career, Barker collaborated with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Adolescent Initiative Program in their Gender and Sexuality Clinic. Barker headed a study here on youth at risk of or had contracted HIV/AIDS, and analyzed the effects of homelessness and home-life instability on pathways to delinquency and overall increased health risks. Barker’s interests are vested in seeking justice for minority populations through academic research. Their specific areas of focus include law and policy, feminist criminology, life course and development, and theoretical criminology.
