Karla Murphy is a native of Mexico, has lived in the US for 20 years, and is now an American citizen. She holds an MS in Multimedia Communication (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 2008), a Certificate in Teaching Secondary Education (Southern Illinois University, 2008), and a BS in Communication Sciences (Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Campus Queretaro, 1991).

Karla has a strong professional background in Spanish language media and communication. In Mexico she worked at the television giant Televisa for over ten years as a reporter, director and host in the company’s the Entertainment and New Division, as well as an account manager in the Corporate Image Division. Since coming to the US she has worked as a translator and multimedia project manager, and a Spanish content editor for entertainment media (TV, movies, sports, celebrity profiles).  Karla is also experienced educator, with a background in teaching both Spanish and Media and Communication Studies. Her Spanish teaching experience includes working as an Instructor at Villanova, Southern Illinois University, and currently at Temple.  She also completed all student-teaching requirements for the Illinois State Board of Education, and holds a Certificate in Teaching Secondary Education in Spanish from Southern Illinois University. Her experience teaching in Media and Communication include at Temple University and Cabrini College.

Karla is currently enrolled as a full-time doctoral student of the Spanish and Portuguese department in Temple University where she was awarded a Teaching Assistantship. Her goal is to use the program to explore her interests in Spanish literature and media and popular culture, while deepening her knowledge in Spanish language teaching.
