Established by Helen Pearlman, CLA ’75, and family and friends in memory of Andrea Pearlman Price, this award is given to a College of Liberal Arts graduating senior who has demonstrated distinguished scholarship in preparation for admission to medical school.

Created in memory of Arthur N. Cook, a department head and dedicated coach, this fund is meant to support talented athletes who show a dedication to their sport. Preference is given to history majors.

Established by Carolyn Karcher, a former faculty member in the Department of English, this award is presented to a junior in the College of Liberal Arts who has demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to progressive social activism and social justice.

Established by former sociology Professor Claude Bowman and his wife Mary, this award is given to the graduating student with the highest grade point average who majored in anthropology, political science, psychology or sociology.

Dr. Alfred M. Sellers Veterans Scholarship

Established in 2013 in memory of Alfred Sellers, a decorated Army veteran of WWII and the Battle of the Bulge, whose studies at Temple were disrupted by the war. Sellers served with a combat engineering unit before becoming a medical corpsman in the Army’s 4th Armored Division where he eventually earned a bronze star for valor. This scholarship is awarded to support veterans who are returning to the College of Liberal Arts to pursue their undergraduate degrees.

Edward K. and Brigitte E. Deeg New American Scholarship Fund

This fund is meant to provide an annual scholarship to a high-achieving incoming student with financial need who is enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, the student must be an immigrant or the child of immigrants. If the student was born abroad, he or she must be a naturalized citizen, permanent resident, an asylee or a refugee. If the student was born a U.S. citizen, he or she must be a child of immigrants.

Gen One Humanities Scholarship

This scholarship is for a first-generation undergraduate CLA student with financial need. Preference to students majoring in a humanities discipline, such as anthropology, English, foreign languages, history, classics, philosophy or religion. Renewable up to four years with a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Greenblatt Endowed Scholarship

To provide scholarship annually to an undergraduate student enrolled in CLA who has demonstrated financial need and academic excellence, with a primary preference for female students over the age of 30 or other nontraditional students as defined by the university.

Established through a 1996 bequest by Stanley Masters in memory of his wife, this scholarship is awarded to College of Liberal Arts students who have graduated from the Philadelphia public school system and demonstrated academic achievement.

Established by Debra and Mitchell Sonkin, CLA ’74, this scholarship is given to College of Liberal Arts students with financial need who have shown academic excellence, have a 3.25 GPA and are members of the Pre-Law Society. Preference to political science majors.

Established in 2007 by family and friends in memory of Naomi Zelnick, this award is given to a nontraditional, self-supporting College of Liberal Arts undergraduate student who is older than 25. Preference is given to female students.

This award is given by the African American Studies Department to a student who has demonstrated outstanding service to the department.

The Frances Ellen Watkins Harper Award

Established in 2014 by the Department of African American Studies in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the doctorate program, this award honors Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825–1911), the multitalented poet, novelist, educator and abolitionist who elevated the lives of African Americans everywhere. The award is given to the College of Liberal Arts student who best represents the discipline of Africology over the course of their undergraduate studies at Temple.

Professor Nicholas Vlachos Memorial Award

Established in honor of Nicholas Vlachos, a former College of Liberal Arts faculty member, this award is given to an outstanding student majoring in Latin or Greek studies in the Department of Greek and Roman Classics.

Criminal Justice Excellence Award

This award is given by the Criminal Justice Department to a member of the graduating class for outstanding academic performance throughout matriculation. The students must demonstrate excellence in scholastic achievements, as shown by graduation in top 5% of the class and a minimum GPA of 3.75. Students who, in addition, have also shown strong leadership abilities, both inside and outside of the classroom, will be given preference.

Criminal Justice Service Award

This award is given by the Criminal Justice Department to a member of the graduating class for outstanding service to the department. The students must demonstrate dedication to the department through active involvement in service or enhance the department’s visibility to the wider university community or outside world. Students who, in addition, have also shown general affinity for community service in the area of criminal justice will be given preference. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is also required.

Michael V. Gallagher Memorial Award in Criminal Justice

Established in 2015 by Jon and Julie Merone, CLA '00, in memory of Julie's brother Michael V. Gallagher, this award is given to a graduating criminal justice major pursuing a career as a law enforcement officer. Determining factors will include academic performance and need.

Albert J. Caplan Prize from the Academy of American Poets

Established by a gift from Albert J. Caplan and awarded as part of the Academy’s University and College Poetry Prize program, the Caplan Prize honors the poetic achievement of an undergraduate student enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts.

Established in memory of Tess Sandra Singer, CLA ’64, by her family, this award is given to a member of the junior class who has shown academic excellence and plans to pursue graduate studies in English.

Loretta C. Duckworth Prize

Established by Loretta Duckworth, CLA ’62, ’65, TYL ’92, and W. Joseph Duckworth, this award is given to an English major who has excelled in their coursework; has consistently selected a rigorous course of study; has shown particular talent at both the process of interpreting literary texts and producing well-argued and well-written papers; and has shown leadership abilities both inside and outside the classroom.

Randy and Samantha Deglin Memorial Award

Established by Beatrice Deglin Leder in loving memory of her grandniece and grandnephew, this award is given to an outstanding graduating English major who plans to pursue a career in the performing arts.

Robert Marler Award

Established in honor of Robert Marler, former Chair of the English Department, this award is given to the student who has produced the best undergraduate essay for the academic year. Students who have produced an essay within any upper-level English course are eligible to submit their essay to the chair of the English Department. While the essay in most cases will be an analytical research paper, the award may also recognize writing of a more relaxed and genial sort. The judgment of quality of this award will be based upon clarity and intellectual force, but also upon style and expression.

Toby A. Olshin Scholarship

Established by her family in 2018, this gift honors former faculty member Toby A. Olshin. Dr. Olshin's scholarship focused in particular on Jane Austen and T.S. Eliot, and her teaching was recognized with a Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award. The gift is given to a student with financial need who, in the opinion of the faculty has demonstrated outstanding promise as teacher, writer, scholar and mentor.

This scholarship is to support students in the English Department creative writing program with financial need. Preference to African-American students.

Dr. Dennis S. Lebofsky and Joan Shapiro Lebofsky Award

Established in 2012 by Dennis Lebofsky, CLA '61, and Joan Shapiro Lebofsky, EDU, '64, this award is presented annually to students whose writing has shown significant improvement and who have excelled during the spring semester in the First-year Writing course required of all students. A committee appointed by the director of First-year Writing selects recipients. One awardee must be a student whose first language is not English; a second, a graduate of a Philadelphia neighborhood high school. Graduates of Central, Masterman, the High School for Girls, magnet schools and charter schools are not eligible for this award.

Established by Annette S. Radoff, in memory of her uncle, Bernard J. Radoff, CLA ’51, ’68, this award is given to a junior majoring in French who has the highest grade point average in their major for the preceding three years. The scholarship is to be used in the fourth year.

Marthe LaVallee-Williams Academic Scholarship

This scholarship is open to French and Italian majors in their sophomore year who have successfully completed one course in French (for French majors) and one in Italian (for Italian majors) at Temple University. Students must have taken the equivalent of the first two semesters of language instruction at time of application. At the conclusion of their Junior year, recipients will be reviewed to determine whether they qualify for a renewal of scholarship for their Senior year. Students must apply through to be considered

This scholarship was established by the William Penn Foundation and others in honor of Sonia Sanchez, former College of Liberal Arts faculty member and Temple’s first Presidential Fellow. The scholarship is given to women’s studies majors who have demonstrated academic achievement and financial need and whose engagement and activism with women’s lives, the struggles and triumphs of people of color, or global or humanist themes demonstrates their potential to make a significant contribution to society.

Established by the Kohn Foundation in honor of Temple University’s sixth president, Marvin Wachman, and his wife, Adeline Wachman, this scholarship is given to a member of the junior class who has attained the highest grade point average in history during the previous three years, with the award to be used in his or her fourth year.

Thomas Meyer Memorial Award

Established by family, faculty, students and friends in memory of Thomas Meyer, lecturer in the Philosophy Department and Intellectual Heritage Program from 2002 to 2012, this award is given to a College of Liberal Arts student majoring in philosophy for community-building activities among philosophy undergraduates. It can be divided between two students in the case of a tie.

This award was established in 2015 through the generous support of the Political Science Advisory Board to help current political science majors complete internships in the course of their studies. Internships must be for at least eight weeks, and preference is given to students who are completing an unpaid internship.

William J. McKenna Memorial Student Assistance Scholarship

Scholarships to graduate and undergraduate political science majors with financial need, with a preference for students who have demonstrated a desire to pursue a career in political science, government or electoral politics. This desire could be demonstrated by, but not limited to, a student's internship within a municipal, state or federal government office or agency; participation in the university's Political Science Society student organization; or participation in another organization or society focused on active engagement in politics and political science.
