I am a professor of modern American history. In my work I have been exploring four broad historical questions: how have Americans understood notions of equality; how have Americans practiced democracy; how have Americans wrestled with the opportunities and challenges of a free market system; and how have Americans exercised power and authority internationally? My work has been supported by grants or fellowships from the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, the American Council of Learned Societies, The Aspen Foundation, the Longwood Foundation, the Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities, the Hagley Library, the Kennedy Library, the Hoover Library, the Fulbright Program, and others. I have been a visiting scholar or an invited lecturer in Japan, Indonesia, Lebanon, France, Russia, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Australia, and Canada.
