Hamida Mubasshera is entering her final year as a PhD student in Economics at Temple. Prior to joining Temple, she earned a master's degree from the International Islamic University of Malaysia and completed her bachelor's at the Institute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, reading books, and traveling.
What first attracted you to Economics?
I was particularly drawn to the robust research methodologies in Economics. For example, in contrast to other social sciences, economics emphasizes causal inference more than mere correlation between two variables.
What is your area of expertise in Economics (Labor, macro, etc.)?
My passion for interdisciplinary approaches has led me to focus on applied microeconomics. I am particularly interested in Health Economics, the Economics of Crime, and the Economics of Risky Behaviors.
In a sentence or two, what is your dissertation about?
In my job market paper, which is the centerpiece of my dissertation, I examine the multifaceted societal implications of internet pornography consumption. This includes various types of sex crimes, violence against women, and mental health issues.
What are your career goals?
After completing my PhD, I hope to pursue a career in research and teaching.
