CLA Dean’s Scholarships & Awards
This application opens at the conclusion of the fall semester each year. Students with a primary major in the College of Liberal Arts may apply for CLA General Scholarships & Awards. Continuing students are encouraged to apply each year. Seniors who will be in their final semester when the application closes are also encouraged to apply. We suggest that students new to Temple University (freshman, transfers) apply each year once they have already completed one full semester at Temple University.

Study Abroad Scholarships & Awards
Study abroad scholarship and award recipients are selected by the S.A. committee during three separate cycles throughout the academic year: fall, spring and summer. Students eligible to apply for these awards have declared a major, minor, or certificate in the College of Liberal Arts and plan to study abroad in the semester for which they are applying. In addition to applying for funding through CLA, applicants must also apply and be accepted into their desired study abroad program through TU Education Abroad.

Bryan Hessert Memorial Award | Established in 2014 by Bryan’s parents, Kathleen and Richard Hessert, and family and friends, to honor Bryan’s commitment and love of Temple as a student, peer advisor, alumnus and staff member on the CLA advising team. Claude C. And Mary Carson Bowman Award | Established by former sociology Professor Claude Bowman and his wife Mary, this award is given to the graduating student with the highest grade point average who majored in anthropology, political science, psychology or sociology. | Dean's Committee Award |

Dr. Alfred M. Sellers Veterans Scholarship | Established in 2013 in memory of Alfred Sellers, a decorated Army veteran of WWII and the Battle of the Bulge, whose studies at Temple were disrupted by the war. Sellers served with a combat engineering unit before becoming a medical corpsman in the Army’s 4th Armored Division where he eventually earned a bronze star for valor. Edward K. and Brigitte E. Deeg New American Scholarship Fund | This fund is meant to provide an annual scholarship to a high-achieving incoming student with financial need who is enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, the student must be an immigrant or the child of immigrants. If the student was born abroad, he or she must be a naturalized citizen, permanent resident, an asylee or a refugee. Epsilon Liberal Arts UG Research Award | This award will support one CLA undergraduate student to develop research skills by working with faculty mentors on faculty-led research projects in the college. Preference to students with little to no outstanding tuition balance. | Dean's Committee Award |
Gen One Humanities Scholarship | This scholarship is for a first-generation undergraduate CLA student with financial need. Preference to students majoring in a humanities discipline, such as anthropology, English, foreign languages, history, classics, philosophy or religion. Lawrence Rosen Memorial Scholarship Fund | Established in memory of Dr. Lawrence Rosen, Temple sociology professor from 1969 to 1999, the purpose of the Fund is to provide a renewable scholarship to students with demonstrated financial need who are enrolled in the College. Rose Kibrick Katz Student Advisor Award | Former College of Liberal Arts faculty member Paul T. Johnson established this award to honor Rose Kibrick Katz’s role in developing the Academic Advising Center, where she served as associate dean and director. The Frances Ellen Watkins Harper Award | Established in 2014 by the Department of African American Studies in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the doctorate program, this award honors Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825–1911), the multitalented poet, novelist, educator and abolitionist who elevated the lives of African Americans everywhere. Chief Inspector Vincent J. Greene Sr. Memorial Award in Criminal Justice | Established in 2007 by Vincent J. Greene Jr., LAW ’03, in memory of his father to provide for annual awards to graduating seniors majoring in criminal justice who are either currently serving as Philadelphia police officers, planning to enter the Philadelphia Police Academy, graduates of Northeast Catholic High School or its successor, or graduates of any Philadelphia parochial high school. | Criminal Justice |
Criminal Justice Excellence Award | This award is given by the Criminal Justice Department to a member of the graduating class for outstanding academic performance throughout matriculation. The students must demonstrate excellence in scholastic achievements, as shown by graduation in top 5% of the class and a minimum GPA of 3.75. The students must demonstrate dedication to the department through active involvement in service or enhance the department’s visibility to the wider university community or outside world. Albert J. Caplan Prize from the Academy of American Poets | Established by a gift from Albert J. Caplan and awarded as part of the Academy’s University and College Poetry Prize program, the Caplan Prize honors the poetic achievement of an undergraduate student enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts. | English |

Dr. Tess Sandra Singer Memorial Award | Established in memory of Tess Sandra Singer, CLA ’64, by her family, this award is given to a member of the junior class who has shown academic excellence and plans to pursue graduate studies in English. | English |
Kenneth E. Williams Memorial Award | Established by Anne Babeck Williams, EDU ’55, in memory of her husband, Kenneth E. Williams, CLA ’54, ’60, ’69, this award is given to a member of the graduating class who excels in the study of English and plans to pursue their master's and doctorate in English at Temple University. | English |
Loretta C. Duckworth Prize | Established by Loretta Duckworth, CLA ’62, ’65, TYL ’92, and W. Joseph Duckworth, this award is given to an English major who has excelled in their coursework; has consistently selected a rigorous course of study; has shown particular talent at both the process of interpreting literary texts and producing well-argued and well-written papers; and has shown leadership abilities both inside and outside the classroom. | English |

Randy and Samantha Deglin Memorial Award | Established by Beatrice Deglin Leder in loving memory of her grandniece and grandnephew, this award is given to an outstanding graduating English major who plans to pursue a career in the performing arts. | English |
Richard Beards Memorial Award | Established in 2014 by New City Writing and the English Department in memory of Richard Beards, a colleague and friend who taught with curiosity and kindness for 50 years at Temple, this award honors a junior or senior undergraduate English major who has shown outstanding effort to promote the literacy and well-being of children in Philadelphia. | English |
Robert Marler Award | Established in honor of Robert Marler, former Chair of the English Department, this award is given to the student who has produced the best undergraduate essay for the academic year. Students who have produced an essay within any upper-level English course are eligible to submit their essay to the chair of the English Department. While the essay in most cases will be an analytical research paper, the award may also recognize writing of a more relaxed and genial sort. The judgment of quality of this award will be based upon clarity and intellectual force, but also upon style and expression. | English |
Robert P. Liversidge III Memorial Award | This award is given to an English major at any level who demonstrates understanding of the importance of the humanities by taking criticism and analysis seriously and thinking through the consequences of ideas. The recipient should also be generous to other students, and an excellent writer. A book and certificate will be given to the student who best meets the award criteria. Faculty members nominate candidates, and the winner is chosen by the English Department Undergraduate Committee. The award book will be chosen by the nominating professor to reflect the student’s interests. | English |
Toby A. Olshin Scholarship | Established by her family in 2018, this gift honors former faculty member Toby A. Olshin. Dr. Olshin's scholarship focused in particular on Jane Austen and T.S. Eliot, and her teaching was recognized with a Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award. The gift is given to a student with financial need who, in the opinion of the faculty has demonstrated outstanding promise as teacher, writer, scholar and mentor. | English |
William Van Wert Award | Established by family, faculty, friends and students in memory of William Van Wert, professor of English, this award is given to an outstanding English major with financial need who has completed their freshman year and is dedicated to the pursuit of becoming a professional writer. | English |

Dr. Dennis S. Lebofsky and Joan Shapiro Lebofsky Award | Established in 2012 by Dennis Lebofsky, CLA '61, and Joan Shapiro Lebofsky, EDU, '64, this award is presented annually to students whose writing has shown significant improvement and who have excelled during the spring semester in the First-year Writing course required of all students. A committee appointed by the director of First-year Writing selects recipients. One awardee must be a student whose first language is not English; a second, a graduate of a Philadelphia neighborhood high school. Graduates of Central, Masterman, the High School for Girls, magnet schools and charter schools are not eligible for this award. | First-year Writing |
Mary Ann Mannino Award | Mary Ann Mannino taught for over fifteen years in the First-year Writing program and was closely affiliated with the Russell Conwell Center (transformed into what is now the Student Success Center), which addresses the academic and social needs of students striving to succeed in the university. This award will honor significant learning and achievement among students in ENG 0701 and ENG 0711, particularly students who have been community-oriented. | First-year Writing |

Marthe LaVallee-Williams Academic Scholarship | This scholarship is open to French and Italian majors in their sophomore year who have successfully completed one course in French (for French majors) and one in Italian (for Italian majors) at Temple University. Students must have taken the equivalent of the first two semesters of language instruction at time of application. At the conclusion of their Junior year, recipients will be reviewed to determine whether they qualify for a renewal of scholarship for their Senior year. Lucia Beck Weiss Prize in Women’s Studies | Established in 2015 by Howard J. Weiss, in honor of Lucia Beck Weiss (CLA ´93) who passed away in 2023, a non-traditional student who, among other professional accomplishments used her Women´s Studies background to encourage and support medical schools in integrating Women´s Health into medical education.
