Study Abroad in Rome

Students declaring a major or minor in Italian are encouraged to study abroad. Temple has its own campus in Rome, Italy, which offers courses in a variety of fields including language, art, architecture and international business. While previous Italian studies are not a requirement for program participation, we recommend you begin language study before traveling to Rome.

To help you take full advantage of your time abroad, Temple University’s Main Campus Italian program offers courses in beginner, intermediate and advanced Italian every semester. We highly encourage our participants to register for these courses before departing for Rome, because, in addition to familiarizing students with the country’s history and culture, studying the language of the host country provides students with the necessary skills required for communication.

Your journey of global awareness begins in Philadelphia but should not end in Rome. Upon returning, it’s recommended that students continue practicing their language skills by furthering their studies through the Italian program so that they may take full advantage of the Temple Rome experience.

Studying at Temple Rome already places students on a track to completing a BA, Minor in Italian Studies.

Planning to study at Temple Rome? Have already studied at Temple Rome? Some of the course you take there might count toward a degree in Italian Studies. Upper level courses focusing on Italy in the fields of Sociology, Anthropology, Art History, Political Science among others may count upon approval of the Italian Program Adviser. Tutoring

Italian advanced students volunteer their time to help their peers enrolled in elementary Italian language courses. Tutors gain teaching experience, under the guidance of Italian full-time faculty members.

Awards and Scholarships

The department offers Marthe Lavallée-Williams Study Abroad Scholarships & Grants ranging from $2,000-$8,000 to College of Liberal Artsundergraduate students in good academic standing. Assorted awards support language study in Italy for one semester, one academic year or one summer.

Scholarships available outside of the department are offered through organizations such as the Coccia Foundation, National Italian-American Foundation and Filitalia. Fulbright Scholarships are also available through the United States Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

The Italian section of the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers the following scholarships and prizes:

Maria Rosa Prize in Italian
This award is given by the Department of French, German, Italian and Slavic Languages to a member of the graduating class in recognition of excellence in Italian studies.

Marthe LaVallee-Williams Academic Scholarship
This scholarship is open to French and Italian majors in their sophomore year who have successfully completed one course in French (for French majors) and one in Italian (for Italian majors) at Temple University. Students must have taken the equivalent of the first two semesters of language instruction at time of application. At the conclusion of their Junior year, recipients will be reviewed to determine whether they qualify for a renewal of scholarship for their Senior year. Students must apply through to be considered.

Marthe LaVallee-Williams Leadership Prize in Italian
This award is given by the Department of French, German, Italian and Slavic Languages to meritorious Italian Club officers who have demonstrated excellence in promoting Italian culture, and fostering a sense of community.

Marthe Lavallee-Williams Prize for Excellence in Italian
Established in 2010 by a bequest from Marthe LaVallee-Williams, a former faculty member, this award is given to a student majoring in Italian who has excelled in the study of the Italian language.

Marthe Lavallee-Williams Study Abroad Award
Established by a bequest from Marthe LaVallee-Williams, a former faculty member, this scholarship is awarded to exemplary CLA majors who will study abroad in France or Italy at a Temple University-approved study abroad program.
